Weevils stop freefall, win two
Coming off a long road stretch that saw the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils drop their last five contests, UAM opened a home stand against Northwestern Oklahoma State University last Thursday, looking to get back into the win column in the Great American Conference.
UAM scored the first points of the contest, a three-pointer by K.J. Lesure. The Weevils maintained the lead until 57 seconds remaining in the half when Northwestern’s Cole Jones tied the contest at 28. A.J. Jones gave the Rangers the lead with 13 seconds remaining in the half before UAM’s Jordan Embry tied the game at 30 to end the half.
Northwestern and UAM exchanged the lead for the first few minutes of the second half until UAM’s Marcus Gilbert connected on a jumper in the paint with 16 minutes, 4 seconds remaining to give the Weevils a 37-36 lead. UAM would never trail again in the contest extending the lead to its biggest margin of 14 points with 2:10 left before securing a 12-point, 70-58 win.
Leading the way for the Weevils was Austin Hardy with 23 points followed by Gilbert with 19 points. Lesure added 12 points and Kwame McBean scoring 10.
Rounding out the scoring was Keelin Jackson, Jared Embry and Jordan Embry with two points each.
UAM returned to Steelman Field House two days later, hosting the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
UAM scored the opening basket of the contest, a layup by McBean, and led for the entire first half of play. UAM’s largest lead came with 1:47 remaining in the half at 13 points, 39-26.
The Weevils finished the half with a seven-point, 42-35 advantage.
The Weevils continued to build on the lead in the second half of play, extending it to 16 points on four different occasions before taking an 11-point, 90-79 victory.
Lesure led the way for UAM with 27 points followed by Gilbert with 15. Hardy added 11, Jackson and Jordan Embry scored nine points each, and McBean finished with eight points. Jared Embry scored six points, and Hunter Dailey rounded out the scoring with five points.
With the pair of wins, UAM improves to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in the GAC.
The Weevils will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, hosting Harding University. UAM will host Henderson State University on Saturday, with a 4 p.m. tipoff scheduled.
