UAM splits league pair

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils were able to have four players score in double digits as they held off the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm 68-60 to improve to 6-1 in the Great American Conference and post their eighth consecutive win last Thursday.
During the first half of play, each team saw their biggest lead of five points, with UAM holding a five-point lead twice in the half. Southeastern gained a five-point lead with 14 minutes, 56 seconds remaining and 13:58 remaining in the half. UAM’s advantages came at the 3:11 and the 1:34 mark of the half.
UAM took the lead with 4:40 remaining off a made three-point shot by K.J. Lesure and maintained the lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 32-29 lead into the locker room.
UAM extended the lead to six points with 19:05 remaining in the game after an Austin Hardy three-pointer gave the Weevils a 35-29 lead.
Both teams exchanged the lead until 11:02 remaining in the game when Hunter Dailey tied the contest at 47 after a made three-pointer. Dailey would give the Weevils the lead a few minutes later with a made layup.
UAM outscored Southeastern 36-31 in the final half of play. Overall, the Weevils shot 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field and 22.2 percent (4-for-18) from the three-point line. The Weevils finished the game shooting 75 percent from the free throw line, going 6-for-8.
For UAMs, Marcus Gilbert scored 14 points with Lesure and Darnell Wright scoring 13 each. Hardy added 10 points, Jordan Embry six, Dailey five and Keelin Jackson three. Kwame McBean and Jared Embry rounded out the scoring with two points each.
However, UAM’s attempt to improve the 7-1 in the GAC was upended two days later as East Central University put an end to the Weevils’ win streak with a 69-64 victory at Steelman Fieldhouse.
In the contest,  Wright led the way for the Weevils with 20 points, followed by Hardy with 16 and Lesure with 14. Jordan Embry scored six, Jared Embry three, McBean and Gilbert two apiece with  Dailey rounding out the scoring with one
The Weevils were outscored in the first half, 34-29, shooting 40 percent (12-for-30) from the field and 27 percent from the three-point line, connecting on three of 11 shots.
The Weevils shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the field for the game while going 8-for-30 (26.7 percent) from the three-point line. UAM finished shooting 54.5 percent (6-for-11) from the free-throw line.
UAM returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against conference-leading Southern Arkansas University at Steelman Field House.
