Pirates stay in thick of race, despite loss
Hosting Lake Village Lakeside last Friday, Drew Central swept its visitors at Drew Central Gymnasium. Visiting West Helena Central on Tuesday for an early Class 3A, District showdown between undefeated league squad, the Pirates weren’t quite so lucky.
West Helena, normally a 4A school but placed in DC’s 3A conference for all other sports than football, needed extra time to get past Drew Central but kept its 8-3A mark unblemished with a 76-74 victory in overtime.
The Lady Pirates also came back home stinging with a 38-31 loss. The setback was just the Pirates’ first in league play and only their fourth overall in 20 games. DC’s senior girls are now 10-9 and 5-2.
Against Lakeside, the Lady Pirates struggled in the first quarter, scoring just three points in the quarter as Lakeside took seven-point lead after eight minutes. Drew Central bounced back in the second quarter, though. The Lady Pirates scored 11 points to Lakeside’s two. The Lady Pirates pulled away in the third quarter, as the Lady Pirates scored 20 points in the quarter behind nine points each from Darbee Forte and Charlayah Ridgell.
Ridgell led the Lady Pirates in the fourth quarter with six points as Drew Central scored 16 points in the final stanza to take a 50-25 victory.
For Drew Central, Forte led the Lady Pirates with 23 points followed by Ridgell with 15—all coming in the second half.
In the final game of the evening, the Drew Central Pirates jumped out to a 16-6 lead as Zeb Trantham scored seven first-quarter points.
Trantham led the way for the Pirates with 35 points and Trenton Eubanks added 10 in the 63-53 win. Malachi Armour led Lakeside with 31 points.
