Pirates collect fifth consecutive 8-3A win at McGehee
What a difference a year makes. Last season, McGehee gave Drew Central four of its five losses en route to defeating the Pirates in Hot Springs for the Class 3A boys’ basketball championship.
Tuesday night, DC earned some measure of revenge as the Pirates used a strong second half to beat the Owls 65-57 at McGehee.
Trailing by one point at halftime, Drew Central scored 41 of its 65 points in the third and fourth periods. Junior Travarus Shead led the way with a game-high 28 points—25 coming after intermission. Classmate Trenton Eubanks followed with 16.
Both were sophomore starters in 2017-18 who well remember the last agonizing loss at DC’s arch-rival. More importantly this winter, the now 14-3 Pirates kept their 3A, District 8 record clean at 5-0.
Unfortunately for Pirate Nation, that wasn’t the case in the senior girls’ game as the Lady Owls gave the Lady Pirates their first 8-3A loss of the year, 41-35.
Junior Darbee Forte was the lone Drew Central player to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
