Lady Pirates earn tough home win over 4A Crossett

Toiling in the shadows of their top-ranked male counterparts all season, it seems, Drew Central’s Lady Pirates just may have broken into the light Friday night. Despite having only five players score, DC blasted Crossett 45-33 at Drew Central Gymnasium.
The win lifted the Lady Pirates to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the Arkansas Activities Association’s “blended” Class 3A-4A, District 12. Fortunately for the Lady Pirates, the Crossett game was the last they have to worry about some made-up league.
All eight remaining games will be against 8-3A opponents and will determine where Drew Central will be seeded in the upcoming 8-3A district tournament. Tuesday’s snowstorm put a temporary halt on those proceedings, though, as DC’s trip to Fordyce was postponed.
The Lady Pirates have extra incentive to finish the season strong, as Drew Central not only hosts the 8-3A district tournament but was awarded the 3A State Championships by the AAA last Thursday (see story on page 1C).One win in the district tourney will assure a trip to Fordyce for the 3A Region 4 Tournament, and one win at FBT Redbug Arena will guarantee DC of getting the chance to play in the state tournament on its home floor.
The 8-3A district tournament dates are Feb. 12-17, th 3A Region 4 dates are Feb. 19-24 and the state championship dates are Feb. 26 through March 3. Head girls’ basketball coach Michael Goad cautioned about getting “the cart before the horse,” so to speak—he wants his Lady Pirates to finish the regular season on a high note first.
With a makeup date for the Fordyce game having not been set as of yet, the Lady Pirates must turn their sights toward Friday night’s meeting with Lake Village Lakeside, a 53-35 victim of DC earlier this winter. Weather permitting, tip off at Lake Village is 5 p.m.
Even though Crossett litimited Drew Central’s scoring Friday night, three of the five Lady Pirates who found the bottom of the net scored in double figures. Senior Breannah Linely led that parade with 16 points, thanks to four made three-point shots. Junior Charlayah Ridgell netted 11 and sophomore Darbee Forte chipped in with 10.
After a second-quarter lapse, Drew Central had to come from behind to earn the victory of the Lady Eagles. A 13-10 advantage after eight minutes evaporated when DC scored only five points in the second period, but a 27-13 run in the second half proved advantageous for Drew Central.
