Julius M. "Mert" McClain
Julius M. “Mert” McClain, 91, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2018, at home while surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on June 14, 1926 in Fountain Hill to Wesley and Bessie (Reynolds) McClain.
Mert served proudly in the United States Army from September 1944 to July 1946. He was stationed in the European Theatre. Mert bravely fought in The Battle Rhineland during World War II. He received the EAME Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mert worked at Whirlpool in Quality Control until his retirement in 1987. He was a life member of the VFW, the Eagles and the American Legion. Being an avid bowler, Mert played on several leagues over the years.
On September 21, 1984, he married Kathleen Wetzel; she survives. Also surviving are children, Deborah McClain, Rita (Greg) Armentrout, Michael (Heather) Jurovcik and Ann (Larry) Mooney, all of Fremont, Ohio; sisters, Pauline Stell and Maxine Yingling, both of Arkansas; six grandchildren, Dale (Crystal), Heather and Holly Jones, Brittany Wagner, Michael Jurovcik and Lisa (Jude) Cook; seven great-grandchildren, Desmond, Donovan, Daija, and Christopher Jones, Dezeree Whitt, Cameron (Ashly) Mooney and Kyle Cook; and three great-great grandchildren, Christopher Jones Jr., Vivenne Jones and Treshawn Murphy Jr.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ervin, Derwood and Terrell.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Fremont, where an Eagles Service was also held. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the funeral home, where there will be an additional hour of visitation being held prior to the start of the service. Pastor Julie Lejman-Guy will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in Clyde, Ohio.
